Abstract

Manganese dioxide is used in dry batteries to prevent buildup of hydrogen gas bubbles around cathode materials, where Mn ions are believed to play active role in the electrochemistry by changing their valence (Mn4+ to Mn3+). This is against the view of MnO2 as catalyst, and we propose muSR studies to elucidate the electronic structure of interstitial hydrogen in MnO2.
