Certain materials, including high-temperature superconductors, transition from a metal to an unconventional insulator called a Mott insulator. Our previous muSR experiments on two families of Mott insulators revealed widespread paramagnetic / ordered phase separation near the disappearance of magnetic order. We will extend these studies to additional Mott insulators to better understand this surprising phenomenon and elucidate the roles of charge conduction, magnetism and lattice.
